Easy Homemade Mashed Potatoes
There are a few dishes every home cook needs to know and Easy Homemade Mashed Potatoes is one of them. Delicious alone but often the perfect vehicle for going with other dishes like Hamburger Steaks with Gravy, Easy Weeknight Meatballs or atop a Shepherds Pie.
I love the versatility of mashed potatoes. My Easy Homemade Mashed Potatoes is kinda a base recipe with just a little butter, milk and salt. But you can take that base and add sour cream for an unusual kick. Add your favorite shredded cheese to make cheesy potatoes. You can even form cold, leftover potatoes into patties and fry them the next day for breakfast and serve with scrambled eggs.

I do not know a single person that dislikes mashed potatoes. Buttery, creamy, smooth or lumpy…with lots of salt. Potatoes are just delicious.
Yellow potatoes are also nutrient-dense, offering high potassium (more than bananas!), Vitamin C, and B6, supporting heart, brain, and immune health. Potatoes are an excellent source of fiber which aides in digestion. Lastly, potatoes have antioxidants, and minerals like manganese.

How To Make Easy Homemade Mashed Potatoes
- Read through the entire recipe so you understand how it flows and the time it takes. Gather all your ingredients and supplies in one spot.
- Place potato cubes in a medium pot. Add water until the potatoes are completely covered. Place on high heat and bring water to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer and cook 10-15 minutes until potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
- Drain water from the potatoes but leave potatoes in pot. Mash with a whisk or potato masher. Add butter, salt and milk. Stir and mash more if desired. Serve warm.
- I like to add 1 Tbs milk, stir and see if I have the consistency I want. Sometimes I want thicker potatoes and sometimes I want them completely smooth and creamy. You can add more milk to get desired consistency. Want more flavor? Add 1-2 Tbs sour cream instead of milk. You can also add a shredded cheese and stir it in to melt while the potatoes are hot.
